The State Department on Adoption and Children's Rights (SDA) is Ukraine's new adoption authority. The SDA is processing domestic adoptions in July and August 2006. International adoption will start again in September 2006 with the 1,200 families who already have approved dossiers. New dossiers will be accepted for processing in January 2007.

Unlike many other countries, Ukraine does not permit pre-identification of children. The child identification process is done during adopting parents' visit to the country. In 2005, U.S. citizens adopted approximately 821 children from Ukraine. Children available for adoption include toddlers from 15 months of age, older and special needs children. Travel required: Yes, at least one, usually two trips; both parents (if married) must travel; each trip may last from two to six weeks.

Singles accepted: Yes

Other: Adopted children must be registered with the local Ukrainian Consulate within 30 days of arriving home. If you live in the US click here to find your Consulate.

The timeline for the annual report on the adopted child has been changed. This applies to all adoptive families regardless of when they adopted from Ukraine. Send a report to the Consulate once a year for the first 3 years after adoption. Then send 1 report every 3 years until the child reaches 18 years of age.
